Indescribable

Many of us know the song from 2002 "Indescribable" written by Laura Story and recorded by Chris Tomlin, but do we actually understand what these words mean?

From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea
Creation's revealing Your majesty
From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring
Every creature unique in the song that it sings
All exclaiming

Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name.
You are amazing God
All powerful, untameable,
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God

Who has told every lightning bolt where it should go
Or seen heavenly storehouses laden with snow
Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light
Yet conceals it to bring us the coolness of night
None can fathom

These beautiful words are taken from Job 38 when God questions Job. Job had become arrogant as we see in earlier chapters, but then God speaks of His own goodness. This is where the song comes from. Lets really focus and meditate on these words.

"From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea, creation's revealing your majesty"

Everything in creation points back to God. Everything from the rocks and the dirt on the ground, to the beautiful evening sunset. It all is created by and for Him. We, as humans, haven't even discovered some of the furthest depths of the sea nor have we seen the highest of heights. We don't have a clue what that looks like, but we know that it is revealing His majesty. We know that whatever the bottom of the deepest ocean looks like, it shows of the majesty of God. And we know that whatever the furthest galaxy and creation in space looks like, that too reflects His majesty.

"From the colors of fall, to the fragrance of spring, every creature unique in the song that it sings"

From the beautiful colors of fall to the fragrance of spring. The changing of the seasons reflect who He is. The way the seasons change so perfectly to sustain life, are all His design. Every single creature that has been created is unique in how it sings praises back to Christ. It is so amazing to think about just how many creatures there are. There is over 30,000 known species of fish!! Each of those sing a unique song back to God, each created in their own unique way. Some may be similar, but they're all different. In 2012, there was an estimated 7 billion people in the world. Each one of us was created so uniquely in the image of Christ, but with different gifts and abilities that God designed in each of us so that as the body of Christ, we are able to function just how we were designed to.

"Indescribable, uncontainable, You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name"

Each star was placed in the exact spot that it should go. Here's something amazing...the Milky Way galaxy alone is home to somewhere between 200 and 400 billion stars. Just in the Milky Way!! And God created and placed each star in the sky exactly where it should go. And He knows each one of them so perfectly.

"All powerful, untamable, awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim You are amazing God"

This is and should be our only response to God. His creation is so indescribable we should be awestruck by it. Filled with awe and amazement at His beautiful creation, and then our only response will be to fall on our knees and worship. Our hearts crying out at how amazing He truly is. We will never grasp just how amazing He really is, but from what we can comprehend in our human minds, our response should be amazement and worship with a spirit of humility because of His amazing creation.

"Who has told every lightning bolt where it should go? Or seen heavenly storehouses laden with snow"

God literally designs every lightning bolt. Sometimes we forget that He is also in the storm. That He has created and intricately designed each storm. The rain, thunder, and lightning all come from Him. This is an amazing truth to remember, the literal and metaphorical statement that He is in the storm. He has designed every storm, and tells every single lightning bolt when and where to strike and speaks into existence thunder itself, but He is also in our storms of life. So often, we can find Him in the good times and the times when everything is going right for us, but we forget that He is there in the storms of life. But He is. These are the times that we cannot rely on our on sight, but must walk by faith and let Him carry us through our storms, because He is over those as well.

"Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light? Yet conceals it to bring us the coolness of night"

This is my favorite part of the song. God literally came up with the sun. The beginning of life for plants, what is vital in sustaining life for everything. Warmth, light, and so many other things begin with sunlight. And He designed it! He put our earth the perfect distance away from the sun to allow warmth. If we were one planet closer to the sun, we would burn up. If we were one planet further away from the sun, we would not have the warmth needed to sustain life. Our planet would be frozen so much of the time. But then He created the moon to conceal it. To hide the sun at night to create darkness so that plants don't burn up from constant sunlight. So that the other side of the world can get sunlight, He created the axis on which the earth rotates. He created this and holds it in His hand. He is the sustainer of life itself. Job 33:4 says "The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.". This is the truth written all throughout this song. That the breath of the Almighty God is what gives us life and what sustains all of creation. Our only response to this is to fall on our face in worship and adoration.

I would challenge you guys to begin to seek God in the little things that we so often take for granted. The cool weather in the mornings, the sunrise and sunset, the sunlight, the very life we have. All of these things we take for granted and begin losing sight of God in all things. Begin to think. Take a moment each morning on your way to work or before you begin your day and just think about God in all things. Begin to not just see Him in the big things He does in your life, but seek Him and thank Him for all things. For the fact that you were able to wake up this morning, that you have a job and you are able to get there. For the cool weather and the sunrise. All of these things are things that become so routine to us, we forget that they are given to us by God and aren't ours. They're things that He could choose to take away at any moment. So begin thanking Him for all things. Because He holds them all. Don't get caught in the daily routine and forget Christ in all things.

Love you guys!
